Governor's Welcome

Welcome to the Governing Body page for the Acorn federation.

The Governing Body is committed to working as a team with staff, parents, children and all other stakeholders to ensure the best outcome for all pupils. Together we aim to make the Federation outstanding in every way while retaining each school’s unique and individual character within their own community.

The Governing Body has a statutory duty to regulate the school with a view:

  • to raising standards of achievement for all pupils within the Federation
  • to providing strategic direction working with the Senior Leadership Team
  • to act as a critical friend to the Executive Head Teacher and Senior Leadership Team
  • to ensure accountability for the performance of the schools within the federation to all stakeholders.

Within this framework the focus of our governance is the wellbeing of the children. We want them to be the best they can be; happy, safe and healthy within a caring, positive and Christian environment.

The Acorn Federation began on 1st September 2011 with a new Instrument of Government which determines the composition of the single Governing Body. We have 18 governors made up from both schools and because both schools are voluntary aided Church of England schools there is a majority of Foundation Governors to maintain the Christian ethos and values.

At this time we have  5 Foundation governors, ( 2 of whom represent the Trustees of Mrs.Ethelston’s,) an ex-officio governor, 3 parent governors, 1 Local Authority governor, 2 staff governors and the Executive Head.

We  are constantly reviewing the way we work to reflect the rapidly changing face of education and  we have set up a working party to evaluate the progress of the federation over the last two academic years and  plan the strategic vision for the future. I encourage you to look at the resulting documents written in May 2013 and available in this section of the website. We continually aim to improve our communication with parents and all stakeholders of the Acorn Federation and welcome any feedback.

All correspondence for the governors must be sent via the Clerk to Governors, Mandy Slingsby.  She can be contacted at St. Andrew's Primary School, Chardstock, Axminster, Devon, EX13 7BJ or

Once approved, the minutes of the most recent full Governing Body meeting are posted here on the website. They are also available to be seen as a hard copy at each school.  Also see below for full governor profiles of our current governing body.
